Bone Marrow Stromal Cells (BMSC)
BMSCs constitute an alternative source of adult stem cells that are easily obtained from adult bone marrow and can differentiate into various non-hematopoietic tissues when implanted in vivo.
Derived from bone marrow of healthy volunteers
Proliferate without differentiation
Engraft into host tissue
Migrate to the site of injury
Multiple academic groups have investigated the utility of BMSCs for treatment of neurological diseases such as cerebral ischemia and spinal cord injury. Studies from the laboratories of Prockop, Chopp and others have shown that BMSCs can be induced in culture to differentiate into neurons and glial cells. The ability of BMSCs to migrate to sites of traumatic brain injury following intravenous or intra-carotid administration was demonstrated in rodent models. Intravenous administration of human BMSCs into rats subjected to stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and MS-like disease significantly improved functional recovery.
Neural Stem Cells (NSCs)
NSCs are uncommitted progenitor cells that exist in the developing or adult nervous system and give rise to multiple specialized cells of the central nervous system.
Proliferate without differentiation in vitro
Engraft into host tissue and migrate within the brain to the site of injury
Respond to local CNS signals by differentiation into neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes
Target to brain tumors
Theradigm's current activities are focused on the establishment of new human NSC lines and development of methods to improve the growth rate and expansion potential of these cells to obtain clinically relevant numbers of these NSCs.
